Kelty Child Back Carriers If you've tried a cheap and cheerful back carrier you may not relish the thought of carrying a child rather than using a pushchair, but that's probably because it was badly designed not because it's a bad idea. When the load is stabilised by tightening the harness straps the space for the child is not compressed. For the comfort of the carrier the harness is fully adjustable to enable the waist belt to sit onto the hips, so the strain is taken predominantly by the hips not the shoulders. Add to that a kickstand which can be automatically deployed or retracted, weather protection for the child and some practical storage for all those things that you'll need to take along with a child and for some people this is genuinely a better alternative than buying an all terrain pushchair. There are even loops to attach toys to - they think of everything ! There are several models available, to some extent it depends how you intend to use it and your budget which will be best for you, although if you are tall then the Back Country may be better as it has a 4" longer maximum torso length than the Base Camp and is sometimes preferred by men. Torso length is the measurement from the nape of the neck to the base of the waist There is a trade off between the weight of the carrier itself compared to the weight of the child and the stature of the person carrying it, but bear in mind that some extra weight is due to additional comfort features and larger storage capacity ! For an older child, and on walks which are not too ardous, a carrier may be there only for backup if the child becomes too tired so a lower specification may do the job. The more frequent your use of the carrier is the better value you will get buying one with a higher specification - especially if you walk in all weathers not just when it's fine. As a general guide the Base Camp is sufficient for carrying a child up to 2 years old for walks of say up to three or four hours (with rest breaks), for the older or heavier child or if you're out for the day then the Back Country may be better.
